Sebastian Mueller is Professor of Medicine at Heidelberg University and former Director of its Center for Alcohol Research. He trained in medicine, biophysics, gastroenterology and hepatology and held academic positions at Heidelberg University, the University of Southern California and Harvard Medical School. For 15 years, he served as Vice Head of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Salem Medical Center in Heidelberg. From 2022 to 2026, he worked as a consultant hepatologist in Switzerland, most recently heading the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit at Hôpital du Jura.

His research spans basic, translational and clinical hepatology. Major areas include alcohol-related liver disease, liver elastography, cirrhosis and the sinusoidal pressure hypothesis, hepatic iron and redox metabolism, and the clearance of damaged red blood cells by the liver. His clinical research includes prospective outcome and mortality studies, international genetic studies and selected diagnostic case reports.

He has published more than 200 scientific articles, supervised more than 20 doctoral candidates and received research funding from the DFG, NIH and other organizations. He edited the Springer reference books Liver Elastography: Clinical Use and Interpretation (2020) and Alcohol and Alcohol-related Diseases (2023). He served as President of the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ESBRA) from 2017 to 2021 and has held visiting professorships at King's College London and Guangxi Medical University in Nanning.
